Memoir of Eastern Europe

I traveled eastern European countries the year before last year, and I was surprised at the fact that old pictures allowed to reconstruct all of historical heritage around a square in a city completely after WWⅡ, which had destroyed them once. I was so impressed by their pride and enthusiasm that I lost my words at that time. I had never realized the importance of the protection of history so much before.

This sentence was a little hard for me to understand, so I tried to make it sound smoother. 1) You say you travel "to" somewhere. 2) "the year before last year" is what we call a mouthfull (too much words) - it's smoother to say "two years ago" 3) I split the sentence since it was long, and I rewrote it - I hope I said what you wanted to say? :)
