I think commas can sometimes come before "because" clauses and dependent clauses more broadly; for example, the following sentence could be correct :
The dog didn't want to eat, because he wanted to play instead.
But it might be misleading if it were to say:
The dog didn't want to eat because he wanted to play instead.
The first sentence means that the dog definitely didn't want to eat, because of a specific reason. The second sentence could either mean that or it could mean that the dog wanted to eat, but not because of that reason.
Or:
I have never been to Timbuktu, which is where she was born.

The "because" part introduces two reasons. Another case where both versions show different meanings:
