In fact, Pinyin is something that is very much like phonetic transcription. When you see a Chinese character, it tells you how to pronounce it. When children start to learn Chinese at a young age, they should start learning Pinyin. Let me give you an example: 妈妈, its Pinyin is "mā ma" The pronunciation of M and A is the same as that of English phonetic symbols.
"-" stands for tone, which means to make the character the first sound.
But, if you are not necessary to learn Mandarin, not learning it is not a bad thing. As you said, learning a language is really a time-consuming thing. It will take several years or decades. Then, why do I study English so hard? Because English is a global language, if you can speak English, you can communicate with people in many countries as people in every country are studying English, but Chinese is not the same. Today is the end of spring and the beginning of summer in the Chinese lunar calendar. I got up early and took a walk inside my mom's residential buildings community and I took some pictures while I was walking. Here I sent them to you and wish you to enjoy them. Happy summer!
