What board game do you like the most?
I don't play a lot of board games. During the lockdown, in march and may of this year, I learnt to play chess.
I like this game but it is very difficult. As I am a beginner, I always loose when I played against someone.
I have to practice a lot to improve my skills at chess.

"chess skills" sounds smoother, but "improving your skills at chess" works too and is a matter of writing style. I would not consider it an error.

That's true. It's not ungrammatical per se; it's more that it sounds more idiomatic to me.
