To me, a scandal feels more like something you'd see on social media or on the news, concerning politicians or celebrities. Although, this could just be me. I didn't have to deal with much drama as a kid, so I didn't need ways of talking about it very much. Personally, I would probably say "rumor", although this word has a slightly different meaning than "scandal".
A rumor is usually implied to be bad, but a rumor can also be good. A rumor also usually has loose evidence, though. A scandal is always bad, however, and the information surrounding it, whether truthful or not, is usually a lot more concrete. Many scandals happen because of something an influencer or celebrity posted online, for instance.
