Why?? Why??

Because our brain doesn't like memorizing. If there are no context or if we don't understand, it's like cramming for an exam which most times go wrong. If you want to memorize English words, unless it is compulsory, it's better to learn these words little by little. Maybe 5, 10 or 20 per day. 100 is too much. When you're learning them, use them in sentences. You can make sentences using things around you. "Today was fabulous". "That book is a fantastic read". Something like this. The most important thing is to use the words because if you don't use them, you'll forget them.
