Grammatical Question
I found a sentence "The author recovers from emergency abdominal surgery in 2019. ", and I wonder why there is no artice before surgery. I would appreciate it so much if someone can teach me the reason in comment !

In the US, we can use articles but it's optional. I think we most often use articles when we're speaking with someone who knows that a mutual acquaintance is going to have a medical procedure. For example,
- He's recovering from the gastric bypass surgery.
- She's recovering from the knee surgery.
- He's recovering from the angioplasty.
If the person with whom we're speaking is unaware that someone was scheduled for surgery, then we would reference the procedure with an article but it's still okay to use the articles.
- He's recovering from gastric bypass surgery.
- She's recovering from knee surgery.
- He's recovering from angioplasty.
We can use possessives with these sentences, too, if the person to whom we're speaking wasn't aware about the scheduled procedure.
- He's recovering from his gastric bypass surgery.
- She's recovering from her knee surgery.
- He's recovering from his angioplasty.
These are all okay.
We do use articles with other medical procedures whether or not the person to whom we're speaking is aware of the scheduled surgery so this is a tricky grammar rule. It's not okay to drop the articles here.
- She's recovering from the tonsillectomy.
- He's recovering from the kidney transplant.
- She's recovering from the caesarean.

I found the sentence, "The author recovers from (an) emergency abdominal surgery in 2019.”
An article is not necessary, but you could add “an” if you wanted to. This would be grammatically correct and would sound natural, too.
Bees is correct that “surgery” is a mass noun and therefore doesn’t require an article, but surgery is also a count noun, which does require an article. Both versions (mass noun and count noun) work in this sentence.

The reason for this is that "surgery" can be used as both a mass noun and count noun, and here it is being used as a mass noun referring to the stated type of surgery and not really one single instance of surgery. Mass nouns do not take articles before them! :)
