Vicious cycle

Lately, I've been having some problems with time management. There has been a surge of tasks I need to complete, and I think I might have gotten into a sort of vicious cycle of being overwhelmed by these tasks and hence not getting enough rest, which significantly worsens my productivity the next morning, and then it all happens again and again. The only way to break this cycle is to finally enjoy some well-deserved rest and put my shoulder to the wheel the next day. That's what I am planning to do today, actually. Therefore, today's text is rather short.

Vicious cycle

The only way to break this cycle is to finally enjoy some well-deserved rest and put my shoulder to the wheel the next day.

I'm not aware of the phrase "shoulder to the wheel" - perhaps it's cultural from another English-speaking country.
A similar phrase that I'm familiar with: "put my ax to the grind"

That's what I am planning to do today, actually.

Great job!

Reading this conversation led me to discover a new resource:
https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/put-your-shoulder-to-the-wheel.html

@blenakI couldn't find any English references for "put my ax to the grind." Is it perhaps an idiom that was translated from another language?

The closest idiom I found was to "put / keep your nose to the grindstone." https://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/keep-your-nose-to-the-grindstone.html

The two idioms (wheel and grindstone) have slightly different meanings, as the site points out.

Haha wait you're right, I'm mixing up two phrases! Yes, there's the phrase "keep your nose to the grindstone" and then there's "I have an ax to grind". Thanks for pointing this out! I hope it's not too confusing.

There has been a surge of tasks I need to complete, and I think I might have gotten into a sort of vicious cycle of being overwhelmed by these tasks and hence not getting enough rest, which significantly worsens my productivity the next morning, and then it all happens again and again.

This sentence is quite long to rely on commas. (Some might even call it a "run-on" sentence). The standard suggestions are to break it into two sentences or to use a semicolon.

I find the situation you describe extremely stressful. Perhaps "Strategies to Deal with a Surge of Tasks that Becomes Overwhelming" is a topic for a future post. Best wishes on managing your current situation.

What do you think about ''put my ax to the grind'', by the way?

I think it very cool that blenak invented a new idiom! It totally makes sense, and I like it. (But since it is newly minted, you might want to stick with putting your shoulder to the wheel.)
