Il y a deux ans, mon ancienne école a offert à ma classe de français la chance de partir deux semaines en France. Les étudiants ont pu aller en octobre ou en avril, et pour chaque voyage, cinq étudiants ont pu participer. Je serais allé, mais il y a deux ans, mon français n'était pas bon du tout!
Two years ago, my old school offered my French class the opportunity to go to France for two weeks. Students could go in October or April, and for each trip, five students could go. I would have gone, but two years ago, my French wasn’t good at all!

Everything that could be said was already said, and brilliantly as always, so I'll just stick my 2 cents to the conversation as a comment here.
Your use of "chance" is perfectly correct, although chance can also be used as "luck", "hasard", "probability". Alternatively you could have used "possibilité" (which you used in the English version) or "l'opportunité".
