いい感じですが、ちょっと文が変です。
上記の書き方か、または「私は世界が無事であること、そして平和であることを祈ります。」のように書けます。

This doesn’t sound natural.
You could probably say something like “今日は最悪な日です”.
This is still not something I would say though.
Maybe you could say “今日は悲しい日です” or something to this effect.

why would が be used instead of は in the second half of the sentence? I get confused by these particles sometimes..

On second thought, "は" is also correct.
In some cases, one is better than the other, but in this sentence, either is fine.
