My First Week in College

Where do I begin? I, as a freshman, have endured so much weariness and various forms of maladjustment since the first day of the first week of this semester. This is the fifth consecutive day that I have slept less than seven hours. Sleep deprivation and long commutes have filled me with draining lassitude. I don't come from the capital, nor do I live in a dorm, so every morning I have to get up before dawn, take public transportation, and walk twenty extra minutes to school. Now, as I think of repeating the same dull process for the next four years, a vast listlessness and numbing sense of futility sweep over me.

I distinctly recall my first day in Taipei -- I was running up and down the street and turning one corner after another, frantically searching for my school. When walking down the buzzing, jam-packed street, surrounded by unfamiliar buildings and pressed elbow to elbow with passersby, I realized I had never in my life felt so alone. My loneliness and disorientation only intensified when I arrived on campus.

Despite my physical exhaustion, I feel much more driven and eager to learn in college than I was in high school. Back in high school, I had some pedantic teachers who demanded blind obedience from students and managed the class with an utterly authoritarian style. Often during class I felt that I had to drag myself out of me deep, agonizing lethargy to pay attention to the teacher. College, by contrast, is a breath of fresh air and provides a more immersive and intellectually stimulating learning environment. So far, the instructors I have had have been polite, well-spoken, and encouraging.
