Is It Rude or Not?
I chatted with a man in English last night.
It was for the first time to talk to him.
We texted for about one hour, and this morning he asked me about my job.
I replied that I’m currently not working, and only taking care of my son.
Then, he said “That’s good. Kids should get full care and attention from their parents.”
I felt uncomfortable with his words then.
I always use “child/children” to mention someone’s child/children.
I know he just told a general opinion.
Can it be rude to use “kid” instead of “child”?
What do you think?

彼と話すのは初めてでした。
私たちはおよそ一時間話し、今朝彼は私の仕事について聞いてきました。
私は、今は働いておらず、子どもを育てているだけだと答えました。
そしたら、彼は「それはいいね。子どもは親にたくさん世話してもらうべきだ。」と言いました。
私はその時、彼の言葉に違和感を覚えました。
私は誰かの子どもについて話す時、いつも”child/children”を使います。
彼が一般的な意見を言ったことは分かっています。
“child”の代わりに”kid”を使うことは、失礼になりえますか。

The word "kids" is informal, but not rude. The term "children" may have felt too formal for the situation.
If I was talking to a stranger, I would use either term. If I was talking to a friend, I would only use "kids" :)

I don’t think he and I are not friends yet now, and that’s why I felt uncomfortable.
I guess I like formal English better than casual. ( I don’t like to use BTW, IDK, U, etc.)
Now I understand to say “kid” was not rude at all! Thanks a lot. 😊

Thank you for the correction and your opinion! I don’t think he and I are not friends yet now, and that’s why I felt uncomfortable. I guess I like formal English better than casual. ( I don’t like to use BTW, IDK, U, etc.) Now I understand to say “kid” was not rude at all! Thanks a lot. 😊
Hahah I totally get you! I don't mind causal English (as in the choice of words) but I don't like getting messages like "R u ok?" (even typing it makes me cringe!) Always wonder how much time people can save by typing "u" instead of "you" 😂🙈. But I think if you feel like he's being too causal, you should let him know. He is Japanese so I think he'll understand that boundaries and politeness are important to you :)

Always wonder how much time people can save by typing "u" instead of "you" 😂🙈. But I think if you feel like he's being too causal, you should let him know. No, saying "kid" when you are referring to children isn't rude, at least in American English.

It’s really weird, but he is Japanese though we talked all in English.
