到现在为止 means "up to now". I think this phrase is often used in context to enumerate what has been done so far.
You used 经常(often) in the second half of the sentence, so I think you want to describe your recent state, it may be better to use 现在(now) than 到现在为止(up to now).

In instant messaging or tweeting, if the sentence is long, people will put spaces between phrases like you do, e.g. "为了学习中文 我经常会……"
But in formal situations (e.g., in more formal emails) it's better to delete the spaces in between XD

一篇日记 is ok

but in this context, adding "一篇" will change the meaning of your sentence.
写日记会提高我的水平 = Keeping a diary will improve my Chinese.
写一篇日记会提高我的水平 = Writing a diary will improve my Chinese. ← means "only writing one diary will improve my Chinese".
