Is 欲しい incorrect, or does 欲しがっています just sound better?

Why is ておきます incorrect? I am studying to prepare for the test, so shouldn't 勉強しておきます work here? Does it sound unnatural?

Is 欲しい incorrect, or does 欲しがっています just sound better?
You can't use「欲しい」without talking about yourself.
「兄は車が欲しいようだ。」か「〜を欲しがっている。」なら大丈夫です。
「ようだ」は"seem"と同じ使い方です。

Why is ておきます incorrect? I am studying to prepare for the test, so shouldn't 勉強しておきます work here? Does it sound unnatural?
「勉強しておきます」is correct, but is unnecessary.
It sounds more natural if you emphasize preparing something like a test.
例えば
「いつもより多めに勉強しておきます。」
