I think during the Cold War the US and USSR proceeded with it in order to display their technology and more capable to the other. It's more political reason than a scientific one. However now, countries try to find discoveries about space or extraterrestrial life. Therefore, the reasons seem to be curiosity and its utilization for human beings. At the same time, I don't deny the development is connected with weapon developments that lead to international advantage.

The final purpose is to find another habitable zone except for the Earth and being able to migrate there. It means expanding the habitat of human beings in the universe.

Great post! I agree with you for the most part, although I think even now (after the cold war) doing well in space means that your country will seem more technologically advanced than other countries.
