Could you please tell me when to add a comma before (and) and when not? : )

English comma rules are really tricky (including for native speakers)! The reasoning here has to do with syntax. Basically, you can connect two sentences with a comma and the conjunction "and" ONLY if both sentences are complete sentences on their own. For example, I could write, "She plays the piano, and she dances" because if I broke this into two sentences ("She plays the piano" + "She dances"), both sentences would be grammatically complete.

However, if I wrote "She plays the piano, and dances," it would be incorrect to put the comma there because if I broke this into two sentences, the second one wouldn't be grammatically complete: "She plays the piano" [complete] + "and dances" [incomplete].

With the sentence above, if we break it up, we can see that the second part isn't a full sentence on its own ("and eaten with bread") because it's missing a subject. Therefore, the comma should be omitted. But if you wanted to keep the comma, you could write, "Mallow weed is sautéed with chopped onions, and it is eaten with bread" (although this sounds a bit wordy).

I hope this explanation helped! These sites might also be useful:
