I think basketball is popular in China. Every school has basketball courts, most public open spaces have basketball courts, some large companies and work units also have basketball courts. But I don't think it is as popular as table tennis. You can see table tennis everywhere in China because it only requires a simpler facility and less space.
Yes, schools are around. Including elementary schools, middle schools and high schools. The schools in urban areas are planned by our Educational Bureau. The schools are distributed scientifically and reasonably.
The reasons why people don't go to the mall frequently may be multiple. The first reason is that there's already a famous mall called Wanda Plaza nearby. The second reason maybe is because it doesn't have a good commercial area. The third reason is maybe because of their own management, something like goods, prices, etc. By any means, it's definitely not because of the pandemic, since my city hasn't had a confirmed case for nearly two years.
