It's not easy to define happyness in a comprehensive way that is fitting for everyone. On the flip side, we can reasonably tell what makes you unhappy: lack of food for you or your beloved ones brings unhappiness, lack of medicine, lack of shelter, etc. These are material things which don't really make you happy but will surely make you unhappy if you don't have them. So you can use money to buy those things that prevent your happiness to occur in the first place. You will not be happy just because you have money to pay for those things, but having food and medicines and shelter enhances your situation greatly, and your odds to be happy too.
