Go or do

Hello everyone,

Can you help me with the verbs “do” and “go”?

I know that it is possible to use do with the words below:
to do weightlifting
to do boxing
to do fencing
to do wrestling

Can I use “go” with these words:
to go wrestling, boxing, fencing, weightlifting?

If yes, what’s the difference?

Go or do

Hello everyone, Can you help me with the verbs “do” and “go”?

If yes, what’s the difference?

Feedback

I would say "to go to the wrestling", "to go to the boxing" etc. It would suggest going to watch a wrestling match, boxing match etc. You might possibly hear people say "to go weightlifting" etc to suggest they were going to some location where they would carry out these activities i.e. to train. It sounds a bit strange to me though.

If yes, what’s the difference?

"I do boxing," means that you are in the habit of doing that specified verb. "I go boxing," isn't exactly complete by itself, it needs an time or a place, e.g. "I go weightlifting on Tuesdays." Similarly "I'm doing boxing," means that you currently do boxing in some way and "I'm going boxing," means that you are leaving to go do boxing somewhere.

Feedback

Notice that "to do" is the actual act of lifting, boxing, etc., and that "to go" is to go from one location to another. "I am going to do boxing," means that I am first leaving for some place, and then to do boxing there.
