In Japan, it is said that combs, white handkerchiefs, and edged tools are not suitable for gift giving. The first one, combs, implies suffer and death due to its pronunciation in Japanese. The second one, white handkerchiefs, associates with a deadman because when people die their face is covered with a white cloth in Japan. The third one, edged tools, implicates cutting ties with people.
I think these taboos are quibbles, and many people don't care about them too much these days.
