Japanese language

In college, I wanted to study Spanish, but my professor/advisor said, "You should study Japanese because Japan is a neighbouring country of Taiwan." So, I took Japanese (Autumn of 2003 onward). My use of Japanese is almost non-existent now. But our time on Earth is brief. I realize I can only do so much and have been concentrating on English. I have forgotten most of my Japanese and only used it once in my life for a few minutes. Every few years, I find a time to use Japanese, but I prefer to use English in real life.
在大学里，我原本想学习西班牙语，但我的教授/导师却说：“你应该学习日语，因为日本是台湾的邻国。” 于是，从 2003 年秋季开始，我就开始学习日语了。 我现在几乎不再使用日语了。但人生短暂，我们能做的事十分有限。 但我意识到自己的能力有限，所以一直都在专注于学习英语。 我几乎忘记了所有的日语，而且这辈子只用过一次，只用了几分钟。 每隔几年，我都会找个机会用一下日语，但在我实际生活中，我更倾向于使用英语。

I think it would sound more natural to say either "The Japanese Language" or just "Japanese"
So, I took Japanese (Autumnfrom the autumn of 2003 onward).
I don't think you need brackets here at all
I have forgotten most of my Japanese, and I have only used it once in my life for a few minutes.

If you find the time to use Japanese on purpose, you could say you "make time" --> "Every few years I make time to use Japanese..."
