This is much hotter than the average year, so the number of people buying air conditioners has been increasing.
In France, there are many houses that aren't equipped with air conditioners, so you can tell how bad the situation is.

We mainly talk about "air conditioning" (or the abbreviation AC) as a general system, rather than "air conditioners" as individual units. Either is fine, though "air conditioning" is more common, I think.
