In Japan, next Monday is a national holiday called Respect for the Aged Day, so there was an article about centenarians in the today's newspaper. According to this, there are about 86,000 centenarians, the highest ever in Japan. Compared to 1998, when the number of centenarians exceeded 10,000 for the first time, it has increased more than eight times.

In Japan, next Monday is a national holiday called Respect for the AgedElders Day, and so there was an article about centenarians in the today's newspaper.

'Respect for the Aged Day' is what it's called on Wikipedia, but I think 'Respect for Elders Day' is more natural. We don't really refer to people as 'aged'.

According to thise article, there are about 86,000 centenarians, the highemost ever in Japan.

'Highest ever' number, but most ever centenarians.

Compared to 1998, when the number of centenarians exceeded 10,000 for the first time, ithe centenarian population has increased more than eight timesfold.

'More than 8 times' means...well that it has increased more than 8 separate times. If it increased by 1 9 times, then that would be 'increased more than 8 times'. You can say 'increased more than eightfold' (which also works for other numbers like twofold, threefold, etc., but mostly numbers 2-11 I'd say), 'increased to more than eight times its previous value', 'increased by more than eight times', etc.

Nice work! I've read that aging populations in China and Japan might cause some problems sometime in the future.
